Two DMC Hospitals are First in Michigan to Achieve Top Nursing Accreditation
Detroit – Today, Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women’s Hospital announced their designation as a Pathway to Excellence® facility. This recognition is given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Pathway to Excellence is a program for healthcare organizations that promote a safe, positive work environment. An organization that achieves Pathway to Excellence is committed to nurses and to values which nurses identify as important in the overall pursuit of safe and high quality patient care. The DMC is the first healthcare system in Michigan to achieve this prestigious status.
“The ANCC is proud to welcome Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women’s Hospital into the Pathway family and to make this first step in Michigan with you with this program,” states Katherine King, Chairman of the Advisory Board for the ANCC Pathway to Excellence Recognition Program. “Our program reviewers at ANCC said that Harper-Hutzel’s application and review process was stellar and we will use it as a model for other hospitals. We appreciate what the hospitals have done for our program and for the nurses and patients in the hospital.
ANCC is the world's largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization, and a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). ANCC created Pathway to Excellence as a means of recognizing hospitals that offer the essential elements of an optimal nursing practice environment.

This is what makes us different and what makes us better,” said Thomas Malone, M.D., president of Harper and Hutzel hospitals. “There is a definite change in the culture here. In addition to Pathway, implementation of the Patient & Family Centered Care program has taken us to a new level where the patients and families are a part of the healthcare team. It has really been exciting to see it come together.”
A Pathway to Excellence facility demonstrates full development, dissemination and enculturation of the twelve Pathway to Excellence Practice Standards within their organization:

• CNO is qualified and participates at all levels

These standards reflect a nursing practice environment that has a positive impact on nurse job satisfaction and retention. In addition, the standards are integrated into the operating policies, procedures, and management practices of all Pathway to Excellence-designated healthcare organizations. The award acknowledges the professional satisfaction of nurses and identifies best places to work.
