Tuesday, April 03, 2012 - DMC Harper University Hospital First in Detroit to Remove Gallbladder
Among the First in the Nation to Perform Single-Incision Robotic Gallbladder Removal

Detroit, MI – DMC Harper University Hospital became the first in Detroit and one of the first 40 sites in the nation to use robotic-assisted surgery to remove a patient’s gallbladder with one small incision through the belly button.

Dr. Michael Wood, surgeon at DMC Harper University Hospital and a national leader in robotic-assisted surgery, performed the procedure on two patients using the revolutionary daVinci® si HD Surgical System. The procedure is done through a single incision, less than 1 inch, made through the belly button, allowing for practically no visible scars on the patient’s abdomen. In addition, patients benefit from less bleeding, quicker recovery times and potentially shorter hospital stays. Dr. Wood completed each of these procedures in a little over an hour.

“The single-site robotic-assisted approach is taking minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to the next level, continuing in the DMC’s reputation for being a leader in technological advancement and innovation.” stated Dr. Wood. “Our patients can now benefit from yet another surgical option that minimizes risk and pain associated with surgery while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.”

About one half a million gallbladder removal surgeries are performed in the U.S. each year, including about 12,000 performed in the Detroit area. The majority of these patients are candidates for robotic single incision gallbladder removal.

At DMC Harper University Hospital, robotic-assisted surgery is used for a variety of procedures, including bariatric (weight loss) surgery, gynecology, urology, thoracic and now gallbladder surgery.
