Wednesday, December 01, 2010 - Three of America's Safest Hospitals are at the Detroit Medical Center
Newly Released Leapfrog Rankings Recognize DMC Detroit Receiving, DMC Harper/Hutzel and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospitals

Detroit, MI – Three Detroit Medical Center hospitals – DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University/Hutzel Women’s Hospital and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital – met the stringent national standards of the Leapfrog Group, the nation’s premier quality ranking agency, to receive honors as top hospitals in the nation for patient quality and safety. The only other Michigan hospital to join DMC in the national rankings is the University of Michigan Health System.

The Leapfrog Group’s national rankings, based on a survey conducted at nearly 1,200 hospitals across the country, are the most comprehensive and current assessments of hospital quality and safety available.

“This is a tremendous reflection of the rigorous commitment the people at DMC have to quality care and patient safety,” said Mike Duggan, President and CEO, DMC. “This is an excellent example of how the DMC hospitals are leading the way in 21st Century healthcare delivery.”

“GM applauds the tremendous efforts of the DMC hospitals recognized as 2010 Leapfrog Top Hospitals for committing to the thorough implementation of these quality and safety practices, and thus committing to saving lives, avoiding unnecessary harm, and decreasing unnecessary health care spending,” said Marsha Manning, the manager for health care initiatives and employee benefits public policy at General Motors. Manning is also Leapfrog’s regional lead for the State of Michigan.

“As a large purchaser of health care, the ability to assess the performance of hospitals using scientifically-based measures is vitally important to us and to our employees and retirees,” added Manning.

This is the fourth consecutive year that DMC Harper University Hospital and the third consecutive year that DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital were selected as Leapfrog Top Hospitals based on their quality and safety scores. In 2009, DMC Harper University Hospital and DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital were the only hospitals in Michigan to receive the recognition.

“This represents an enormous commitment by the institution to not only measure what they do against tough standards, but also to work for change and be transparent about it,” said Leapfrog Chief Executive Leah Binder.

About the Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group is a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage founded a decade ago to work for improvements in health care safety, quality and affordability. Initially organized by the Business Roundtable, it is now an independent advocacy group working with a broad range of partners, including hospitals and insurers.

The survey, which launched in 2001, focuses on four critical areas of patient safety: the use of computer physician order entry (CPOE) to prevent medication errors; standards for doing high-risk procedures such as heart surgery; protocols and policies to reduce medical errors and other safe practices recommended by the National Quality Forum; and adequate nurse and physician staffing. In addition, hospitals are measured on their progress in preventing infections and other hospital-acquired conditions and adopting policies on the handling of serious medical errors, among other things.
